A wedge anchor is a type of mechanical fastener typically used in building and construction applications, often within concrete or masonry. Innovatively designed to be versatile, a wedge anchor can provide a secure foundation for a wide range of materials, such as erecting structural steel columns, and installing machinery bases, pumps, support beams, and plumbing fixtures. Preloaded with a hex nut and washer fastener and featuring a positively locking mechanism for reliable performance, quality wedge anchors feature a zinc coating for optimal corrosion protection, extending the longevity of the attachment point.

What Is a Wedge Anchor?

Wedge anchors are made from solid, high-grade steel and are designed to be used as permanent fasteners, or anchors. The anchor itself is a threaded rod that is inserted into a pre-drilled hole in the base material, usually concrete, masonry, or brick. A wedge-shaped expansion clip slides up the rod, toward the surface of the base material, and is firmly locked into place when tightened. This provides a positive anchor in the substrate, ensuring the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of the wedge anchor is realized. The head of the wedge anchor, which can feature a variety of flat head, acorn, hex, or other styles, functions to secure the fastening material during installation.

Advantages of Wedge Anchors

Wedge anchors are a widely used fastening choice are most commonly used in materials that are low in thickness, have low compressive strength, or where the area of application has irregular shapes. These anchors are also ideal for applications in seismic areas due to their reduced risk of coming out of the substrate. Wedge anchors are also easy to install and provide a reliable and stable footing for a structure or device--regardless of the changes in temperature or surrounding materials.

Applications for Wedge Anchors

Wedge anchors are commonly used as fasteners in a variety of applications, usually in conjunction with materials such as steel, concrete, brick, masonry, and stone. Some common uses include anchoring steel structures or large machinery, erecting structural steel columns, installing machinery bases, boat lifts and dock equipment, mounting support beams, attaching fixtures and connecting light fixtures, or plumbing fixtures.

Exterior or Weatherproof Applications

Due to their corrosion-resistant coating, wedge anchors are suitable for many outdoor and weatherproof applications, such as installing junction boxes, industrial signage, electrical transmission lines, and hand railing systems. The zinc-coated coating improves corrosion resistance in outdoor applications and makes them ideal for coastal areas as well.

Installation for Wedge Anchors

Before using any wedge anchor, the base material should be tested for core hardness and moistness. This can be easily accomplished with a Stanley hardness test, from a parts testing facility, or with an appropriate hand held core hardness tester. Also, before using wedge anchors, the proper hardware, such as hex nuts, washers, and drivers, must be determined and be prepared for use.

To install a wedge anchor, first drill a hole the same diameter as the anchor into the base material. The hole should be slightly larger than the anchor, but no deeper than the designated embedment depth of the product. Next, insert the wedge anchor, careful to align the washer flush against the base material. Secure the fastener with the tightening tool and torque to the specified tightness at the designated torque setting. If a torque wrench is not available, then a wrench can be used to reach the appropriate torque value. However, a torque wrench is recommended to meet the necessary specifications.

Utilizing a wedge anchor makes any project more secure and reliable, while providing a full matrix of faster process times and accuracy. Available in several sizes and with corrosion protection, these anchors are installed easily and provide unsurpassed foundations for a wide range of applications.
